History:
★ As the eldest son, Naoki often bears the responsibility of caring for his two younger brothers. His family isn’t poor, but both his parents work full-time to support their lifestyle (both work in a bank). Because of this, Naoki took on most of the household chores, and became adept at cooking, cleaning, etc. He lived comfortably, but his parents were rather strict, and constantly compared him to their image of the “perfect son.” They deemed some of his interests as inappropriate for “the eldest”, such as his love for stuffed animals (which he then began to secretly stash in a drawer)-- “What are you doing with those silly things; you’ve surely outgrown these by now!” Because of this, he began to hide his true feelings and interests to fit their mold.

When he entered middle school, he became extremely close to another boy in his grade. During the middle of the year, Naoki showed him his collection of stuffed animals, thinking they were close and that he wouldn’t be judged. Instead, he was ridiculed:

“What is that, I hung out with you because I thought you were cool!”

From then on, the boys at school teased him because of contrast between his appearance and his likes, and Naoki became somewhat of a social recluse. It wasn't that he didn't want to interact with people, but that he was just afraid of it. He also felt he couldn't trust his own intuition about others. Some of the girls in his school took pity on him and he maintained a semblance of a friendship with them for the rest of his middle school years, though he was still afraid to reveal anything about himself. He got very into gaming during this time to take his mind off things and get away form the real world. When school was over, he would often go to the arcade after telling his parents he was "studying" (although he really did study first somewhere and then go to the arcade).

His family moved to Sugigawa as Naoki was about enter high school because of his father's transfer to another branch. His parents now leave him to do what he wants, since he maintains his grades (and he hides what he thinks they would disapprove of). Viewing this as a new start, he hopes to find people who will accept him for who he truly is, get rid of his fear for relationships, and not always have to hold back his emotions.
